Airdrieonians FC Scottish football club, more commonly known as 'Airdrie' after the town where it was formed in 1878 as Excelsior. The club changed its name to Airdrieonians in 1881 and were admitted to the League Division Two in 1894, went on to win the Second Division championship in 1903, 1955 and 1974. Airdrieonians’ most successful period came in the 1920s when they won the Scottish Cup in 1924 and also finished runners-up in the First Division championship four years in succession (1922-26). Much of the subsequent two decades was spent in the Second Divison. After winning the Second Division championship in 1955 the club enjoyed a long spell in the top flight, broken only by two short periods in Division Two (1965-66 and 1973-74). In 1975, with the formation of the Scottish Premier League, Airdrie found itself in the new Division One (now the second tier) and in 1981 were promoted to the top level where they spent two seasons. A highlight from this period was reaching the Scottish Cup Final in 1975. The nineties ushered in a period of success: they won promotion to the Premier League in 1992 and reached the 1992 and 1995 Scottish Cup Finals (losing both). The club’s subsequent demise was swift. Having spent most most of its history at Broomfield Park in Airdrie town centre, Airdrieonians had difficulty acquiring planning permission for a new ground . They ground shared with Clyde at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld for four seasons before moving to into its new home, the Shyberry Excelsior Stadium, in time for the 1998/99 season. Continued financial problems, however, led to the club’s liquidation in 2002.
