Albion Rovers FC history

Albion Rovers FC is a Scottish league team from the North Lanarkshire town of Coatbridge. The club was formed by the merger of Coatbridge teams Albion and Rovers in 1882.  They were a dmitted to the Scottish Second Division in the 1902-03 season where they remain until the First World War when they joined the Western League. In 1921  Albion Rovers were invited to join the reformed Scottish League Division Two. They gained promotion in 1934 when they won the Second Division title spending the years before the Second World War in the top flight.  Another notable achievement of this period came in 1919-20 when, having beating Rangers after two semi-final replays, they reached the Scottish Cup Final where they were narrowly beaten 2-3 by Kilmarnock at Hampden Park. After the Second World War they were placed in the newly created B Division (the second tier). They spent one more season in the top flight (1948/49) but returned to the B Divison where they remained until 1975 when they were placed in the Second Division (third tier) of the newly reconstructed League system.   The only other successes to have come the club's way were Second Division championships in 1989 and, having been placed in the Scottish Third Divison in 1994 after another reconstruction, the Third Divison championship in 2011.
