Sir Alex Ferguson, (born 31 December 1941 in Govan, Glasgow) is a Scottish football manager and former player, best known as manager of Manchester United between 1986 and 2013. His playing career began as an amateur with Queen's Park, where he made his debut as a striker aged 16 before moving to St. Johnstone in 1960. Dunfermline signed him in 1964, and Ferguson became a full-time professional footballer.  The 1965–66 season saw Ferguson notch up 45 goals in 51 games for Dunfermline. He then joined Rangers for £65,000, a record fee for a transfer between two Scottish clubs. He was unable to command a regular place and was transferred to Falkirk before finishing his career at Ayr United.  He was only manager of East Stirling for four months before he moved to the Paisley club, St Mirren. Ferguson steered the team to promotion in 1977 but was dismissed by the club over a dispute concerning  bonus payments to his players. He was immediately snapped up by Aberdeen. Under Ferguson they won three League titles, four Scottish Cups, one League Cup, and the European Cup Winners Cup (beating Real Madrid) in 1983.   He moved to Manchester United in 1986 where during 26 years as manager Ferguson guided the team to thirteen league championships and two Champions League titles. In 1999, he became the first manager to lead an English team to the treble of league championship, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. As well as being the only manager to win the FA Cup five times, Ferguson is also the only manager ever to win three successive league championships in the top flight in England with the same club (1998–99, 1999–2000 and 2000–01), repeating the feat again in 2006–07, 2007–08 and 2008–09. He has won 49 trophies in all making him the most successful manager in British football history. Ferguson has also been named Manager of the Season a record eleven times.   He was knighted in 1999 for his services to the game.
