Alloa Athletic FC is a Scottish football league club, based in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. They are nicknamed 'The Wasps' for their kit's distinctive black and gold hoops. Formed in 1875 as Clackmannan County, the club changed its name to Alloa a year later and then to Alloa Athletic in 1883. Alloa competed in the Central League before joining the newly formed Second Division in 1921. They were promoted to the First Division during their first season but only survived in the top tier for one season. Promotion was achieved again in 1938-39 but the onset of the Second World War saw the new season curtailed after just five games. When the leagues were re-organised after the war, Alloa were placed back in Division Two now called B Divison. This set the pattern for much of their history, long periods in the Division Two punctuated by briefs periods in Division One. In 1975, with the restructuring of the League, Alloa found itself in the third tier of Scottish football (still called the Second Division). Following further league reconstruction, Alloa found themselves as founder members of the new Third Division in 1995. Alloa won this league in 1997-98, the club's first championship win since 1921-22. They have been promoted to the First Division in 1999 and 2002 but were relegated after just one season. The highlight of the period was victory in the Scottish Challenge Cup in 1999. They were promoted as champions of Division Three at the end of the 2011-12 season and the following season secured promotion to the second tier of Scottish football with victory over Dunfermline in the play-off final. They found themselves in the relegation play-offs at the end of the 2014/15 season where they defeated Forfar. In 2016 they were relegated back into League One.
