Annan Athletic FC was formed in 1942 in the Scottish town of Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. Its location on the Scottish border has allowed the club to compete in competitions in both Scotland and England. Annan played at junior level until 1952 when it was accepted as members of the Cumberland FA and joined the Carlisle & District League. A year later they moved out of their original ground, Mafeking Park, and into Galabank Annan where they still play. In 1977 the club committee decided to pursue their future career within Scotland and became members of the Scottish FA joining the South of Scotland League. Over the next ten years Annan won every competition available to them and in 1987, they decided to enter their first team in the East of Scotland League, which offered a higher level of competition. After winning the First Division title and promotion to the Premier league at the first time of asking, Annan won the East of Scotland Premier League championship in 1990. Annan finally secured league status when they replaced Gretna FC who resigned from the SFL in June 2008. The clubs best finish in the SPFL was second in League Two in 2013-14 whilst its best result in the Scottish Cup was reaching the third round on three occasions, most recently in 2011-12.
