Carlisle United FC English football team from the town of Carlisle, Durham. It was formed when two Carlisle based teams, Shaddongate United and Carlisle Red Rose, merged in 1903. The newly formed club initially played at Milhome Bank and later at Devonshire Park, before finally settling at their current home Brunton Park. In 1905, Carlisle joined the Lancashire Combination but only after agreeing to pay all visiting teams’ expenses for two years. After the First World War a new limited company was formed and in 1922, United won the North Eastern League championship. In 1928, after a good FA Cup run and runners-up position in the League, Carlisle were elected to the Football League at the expense of Durham City. Apart from a poor season in 1934-35, which ended with re-election, Carlisle quickly established itself as a solid mid-table side. They had to wait until 1962 to win their first promotion from the Fourth Division. Carlisle then won consecutive promotions in 1964 and 1965 to the Second Division , and established themselves as a Second Division side. Carlisle spent their only season in the old First Division in 1974-75. They won their first three fixtures of the campaign to top the table, but finished the season in bottom place and were relegated. A decline over the next 13 years saw them fall back into the Fourth Division by 1987. In 1992, United finished bottom and would have gone out of the League had Aldershot not resigned. They continued to struggle until relegated to the Conference in 2004 before returning to the League via the play-offs after only one season and topped this by going on to win League Two in 2006. hey went on to win the League Two title in 2005-06 and remained in the third tier of English football until relegation at the end of the 2013-14 season.
