Chester City FC was a former English league side based in the city of Chester, Cheshire. The original club was founded in 1885 when Chester Rovers and Old King's Scholars amalgamated to form Chester FC – they did not become Chester City until 1985. For the first five years of their existence the club played only friendly matches until in 1890 they joined the Combination. In 1898, Chester moved to a new ground but was forced to disband only twelve months later when the ground was sold for housing. In 1901, the club was reformed and by 1920 Chester moved up the Lancashire League. After the First World War, the club became founder members of the Cheshire County League and in 1931 they were elected to Division Three (North) taking the place of Nelson. For the first ten years of their League career Chester never finished below tenth place but after the war, the club struggled and when the regional divisions were scrapped in 1958, Chester found themselves in Division Four. They had to seek re-election three times in succession between 1960 and 1963 and finally lost their 69-year league status on 6 May 2000. They returned to the League when they won the Conference title in 2004. Five years later, however, they finished 23rd and dropped back into the Conference. After a series of financial disasters, the Conference voted to expel the club from the league on Friday 26 February 2010 and their record was expunged. A fortnight later, Chester FC was wound up in the High Court, opening the way for the supporters to set up a "phoenix club" to play at the Deva Stadium. Following a poll of fans, the new club adopted the title Chester FC. Chester played their home games at the Deva Stadium which was Chester City’s ground from 1992. The ground and stands are geographically inside Wales with just the club offices situated in England.
