Cliftonville FC (the Reds) from north Belfast was founded on 20 September 1879 by John McAlery and is the oldest football team in Ireland. Since 1890 the club has played at Solitude. Cliftonville has won the Premier League five times (1906, 1910, 1998, 2013 and 2014), and the Irish Cup 8 times. During the 1880s Cliftonville also played in the English FA Cup, competing in the competition proper in 1886–87 and 1887–88. Cliftonville were founder members of the Irish League in 1890 and won the league for the first time in 1906. An amateur team until the 1970s, Cliftonville did not compete for top honours until the 1990s when they won their first league title in eighty-eight years. Their most successful season was in 2012-13 when they won the Irish League Cup and League Championship. They retained the Championship the following season and won the Irish League Cup in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2022.
