Darlington FC is a former English League football team based in the town of Darlington in County Durham. The club's nickname is the Quakers, in reference to the religious movement that had a historic influence on the town. Darlington Football Club was founded at Darlington Grammar School in 1883. In 1889 it joined the new Northern League which they won in 1896 and 1900. The club turned professional in 1908 and joined the North Eastern League. In 1919–20 the side managed to finish second in the North Eastern League and the following year were champions. This gained them entry into the newly formed Third Division (North). In 1925, they were champions and won promotion to Division Two but were relegated two seasons later. Darlington had to apply for re-election in 1933 and 1937. In 1958 they became members of the new Fourth Division. In 1966 they finished runners up to Doncaster Rovers and gained promotion. Unfortunately they were relegated after one season. During the 1970s Darlington had to apply for re-lection five times. The club was promoted again in 1985, but were relegated two season later. Worse was to come in 1989 when Darlington were relegated to the Conference after they finished bottom of the Fourth Division. They returned to the Football League at the first attempt as Conference champions, and a year later they won the Fourth Division title. Darlington's spell in the Third Division lasted just one season. In 2009-10 Darlington finished bottom of the entire League system once again and were relegated to the Conference for the second time. Administration the following season ensured relegation to the Conference North and attempts to avoid liquidation only ended with the FA banishing the club four tiers to the Northern League Division One. The club was also required to adopt the new name Darlington 1883. Darlington currently play in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.
