Durham City AFC is a former English league side from the city of Durham. Formed in 1918, Durham was admitted to Division Three North of the Football League in 1921. After finishing second-from-bottom in 1927–28, the club failed to win re-election, gaining only 11 votes to the 22 received by the newly elected Carlisle United.Durham dropped back into Division One of the North Eastern League, replacing their reserve team. They finished bottom of Division One in 1928–29 and were relegated to Division Two. However, after finishing as Division Two runners-up in 1930–31, they were promoted back to Division One. In 1933 they were renamed City of Durham but, after three consecutive finishes in the bottom three between 1934–35 and 1936–37, they ended the 1937–38 season bottom of the league. They dropped into the Wearside League, but folded in November 1938, partly due to the introduction of greyhound racing at their Holiday Park ground. The club was disbanded in 1938, but was reformed in 1950, at first playing in the Wearside League before gaining admission to the Northern League in 1952. They currently play in Division One of the Wearside League.
