Falkirk F.C. are a Scottish football team based in Falkirk (nickname ‘The Bairns’).  The club was founded in 1876 and two years later joined the Scottish Football Association. Falkirk moved to Brockville Park in 1884, which remained the club's home ground for 118 years.  After playing mostly friendly games and taking part in the  Scottish Cup during the early years of its existence, the club was elected to the second division of the Scottish Football League in 1902–03.  They were promoted to the First Division after finishing as runner-up in 1905.  Falkirk was initially successful in the First Division, finishing as runner-up in both 1908 and 1910.  In 1913 the team won the Scottish Cup for the first time. They retained their place in the First Division for thirty years until  1935 when they were relegated to the Second Division. The following season they won the Second Division title and finished near the top of the table until competition was suspended in 1939. In 1946, Falkirk were placed in Division A (first tier) where they remained  until  relegated in 1951. Once again they bounced back immediately and went on to win the Scottish Cup in 1957.  In 1959 they dropped back into Division Two but were promoted again in 1961.  Falkirk went back down in 1969 and returned immediately as Division Two champions in 1970. History repeated itself 1974-1975; relegation followed by immediate promotion but this time, due to the reorganisation precipitated by the introduction of the Premier Division, Falkirk found itself  still in the second tier. The club also spent three seasons in the late 1970s in the newly created third tier but won the championship in 1980 to return to the second level and in 1986 they were promoted to the Premier Division which was briefly expanded to 12 clubs. In 1988 Falkirk finished 10th out of 12 and were unfortunate to find themselves relegated when it was decided to return to a ten club Premier Division. In the early 1990s Falkirk went up and down between the top divisions and spent the latter part of the decade challenging for, but never quite achieving promotion. Following four successive top three finishes in the First Division from 1997–98, the club's fortunes changed dramatically and it finished the season in ninth position, which would have qualified the club to be relegated to the third tier. However, it  escaped relegation by the liquidation of fellow First Division club Airdrieonians on the last day of the season. Despite indifferent League form Falkirk were beaten finalists in the 2009 Scottish Cup (1-2 to Rangers) and reached the League Cup semi-finals. They  were denied entry to the top tier of Scottish football in 2000 and 2001 due to the fact that Brockville Park did not meet SPL standards. In 2003 Falkirk left Brockville Park to share Stenhousemuir’s ground on the outskirts of town while a new stadium was built that met the stringent SPL requirements. In April 2005, they clinched the First Division title and were finally readmitted to Scotland’s elite. They were relegated to the First Division, now the second tier of Scottish football, at the end of the 2009-10 season. In 2014-15 they were surprise finalists in the Scottish Cup Final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle but lost 1-2 in a closely contested game. After a couple of near misses with promotion, the club were relegated to the third tier of Scottish football at the end of the 2018-19 season.
