Forfar Athletic FC

Forfar Athletic FC (nickname the Loons) is a Scottish semi-professional football club from the town of Forfar, Angus. The club was founded in 1885 when the second team of the older Forfar club called Angus Athletic broke away to form Forfar Athletic. In 1891, Forfar became founder members of the Northern League. In 1913 the club entered teams in both the Central and Northern Leagues but when the Great War broke out they closed down for the duration. They returned to the Central League after the war and joined the Scottish Second Division in 1921 when the League was incorporated into the Scottish Football League. Forfar struggled and were relegated in 1925 to the newly formed Third Division. After the Second World War they found themselves in the C Division (third tier of Scottish football). In 1949, the club won their divisional championship and were promoted to Division B. Forfar remained in the B Division and its successor the Second Division until finally winning the divisional championship in the 1983–84.  They continued in the First Division until  1991–9, when they finished bottom having won only five matches and lost twenty seven.  Forfar remained in the Second Division until the close season of 1994, when league reorganisation saw them placed in the new Third Division. A successful campaign saw the club win the inaugural Third Division Championship in 1995.  They were relegated back to the Third Division and for much of the next twenty years were promoted and relegated between the Second and Third Divison with breathtaking regularity.  Between 2000 and 2006 they led a relatively settled existence in Scottish Division Two (third level) before being relegated back down to the lowest division.  They were promoted back to the Second Division (now League One) in 2010 through the play offs with a 2–0 victory against local rivals Arbroath. They remained in League One until 2016 when they were relegated to League Two. They returned to League the following seasons via the play-offs beating Annan Athletic and Peterhead where they remained until relegation in 2022.
