Gateshead FC is a football team based in Gateshead, north-east England. The club started as South Shields F.C. in 1899 eight miles from Gateshead in the town of South Shields. They played in the Northern Alliance then the North Eastern Leagues before joining the extended Football League Second Division in 1919–20. The mid-to-late 1920s saw South Shields struggling financially before in 1928 the club finished bottom and were relegated to the Third Division (North). After two unsuccessful seasons in the lower division, the struggling club took the step of moving to another town in search of more support. Newcastle upon Tyne, was mentioned as a possible destination, but Gateshead was eventually chosen, mainly due to the enthusiastic support of the Gateshead Council. A new stadium was constructed at Redheugh Park in the West end of Gateshead and South Shields FC was relocated taking on the name of their new location. Thereafter, there was little to celebrate apart from a dramatic FA Cup run in 1953 that ended in a quarter-final defeat by Bolton. In 1959, Gateshead were placed in the new Fourth Division but were surprisingly voted out of the League in favour of Peterborough United in 1960. After an application to join the Scottish Football League was rebuffed, Gateshead competed in various regional leagues until 1968 when they became founder members of the Northern Premier League. Two years later they lost their place to another former League club, Bradford PA and in 1973, Gateshead was wound up.
