Howard Kendall, Everton FC

Howard Kendall (1946-2015 ) footballer and manager  joined Preston North End as an apprentice in 1961. He turned professional in May 1963 and played in the 1964 FA Cup Final against West Ham United: at the time the youngest player to appear in the final in the 20th century. Originally a defender, Kendall joined Everton for £80,000 in March 1967 where he was moved into midfield with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey. This famous trio (given the nickname The Holy Trinity), were a major component of the Everton team that won the Football League First Division in the 1969–70 season. He was transferred to Birmingham City in February 1974 and later to Stoke City in August 1977 for a fee of £40,000.  Kendall was made player-coach at Stoke City in February 1978 and played a pivotal role in the 1978–79 season when Stoke won promotion to the First Division. He moved into management with Blackburn Rovers in 1979 before becoming manager of Everton in 1981. Two championships followed (1985 and 1987), an FA Cup in 1984 and European Cup Winners Cup in 1985.  Kendall was named the English Manager of the Year on two occasions in 1985 and 1987. Frustrated by the exclusion of English clubs from European competition he moved to Athletic Bilbao before returning to English football. He spent two further spells as manager of Everton but was unable to repeat his earlier success.  “Anyone who saw Howard play knows he was a great player,” another former Everton player and manager Joe Royle said. “Managing our club three times and winning seven trophies, he was a true Everton legend. But, most importantly of all, he was a lovely man. He was truly a man of the people.”
