Ian St John, (7 June 1938-1 March 2021) Scottish footballer who began his career at his home town club Motherwell where he scored one of the fastest hat-tricks on record: 2 minutes and 30 seconds, against Hibernian in 1959. Standing at just five feet and seven inches, St John was a feisty competitor. He transferred to Liverpool on the 2 May 1961, for more than double the previous highest transfer fee paid by the Anfield board, £37,500. He earned his fee over the next ten years by serving as one of the most successful members of Bill Shankly's team, helping Liverpool to success in the League Championship (1964 and 1966) and FA Cup (1965), where he scored the winning goal with a spectacular header. He spent the last years of his playing career at Coventry City (1971-2), then Tranmere Rovers (1972-73) before entering club management with Coventry City, as Assistant Manager (1973), then Manager at Motherwell (1973-4) and Portsmouth (1974-7). St John was selected to play for Scotland making his début as a Motherwell player in a 3-2 friendly victory over Germany at Hampden Park on the 6 May 1959. The first of his 9 goals came a year later, again, at Hampden, but this time in a 3-2 friendly defeat at the hands of Poland on the 4 May 1960. Although he appeared on television from the late 1970s, it was his partnership with another ex-footballer Jimmy Greaves in ITV's Saint and Greavsie that became a firm favourite with football fans.
