Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC (also known as Caley Thistle and Caley Jags) is a Scottish football club based in Inverness. Their home ground, Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, is situated beside the Moray Firth, in the shadow of the Kessock Bridge. Caledonian Thistle F.C. formed in 1994 following the merger of Caledonian and Inverness Thistle, both members of the Highland Football League. Inverness Thistle FC and Caledonian FC were both formed in 1885 and together with a third senior club in the city Clachnacuddin, formed the following year, they became founder members of the Highland League where they enjoyed considerable success for more than a century. The new club was formed to apply for a vacancy in the Scottish Football League created when the league restructured in 1994 to four divisions of ten teams each, and was elected to the Scottish Third Division along with local rivals Ross County. The club's name was amended to Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C. in 1996 at the request of Inverness District Council. In 1999, now fully professional, they won promotion to the Scottish First Division (second tier). In 2000 they defeated Celtic in the Scottish Cup 3–1 at Celtic Park which resulted in the classic headline "Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious" in The Sun which is now framed in the foyer of Caledonian Stadium. In 2004 Inverness clinched the First Division title. However the club’s ground did not meet SPL standards which resulted in a temporary ground share with Aberdeen FC until January 2005 when the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium was opened. The upward trajectory of the club was temporarily halted in 2009 when Inverness was relegated on the last day of the season. The team were unbeaten throughout 2010 and on the strength of this run they were promoted back to the top level at the end of the season. In 2014/15 they defeated Celtic 3-2 in a controversial semi-final to reach their first Scottish Cup Final. Just over twenty years since its formation, Inverness went on to win the Scottish Cup defeating Falkirk 2-1 in the final. Inverness CT were relegated to the Scottish Championship on the final day of the 2016–17 season.
