Ivor Allchurch

Ivor Allchurch (16 October 1929 - 9 July 1997) was a prolific goalscorer for Swansea, Newcastle United and Cardiff during the 1950s and 1960s. He scored 245 goals during his career, including 160 (a club record) for Swansea. The first man to play more than fifty times for Wales, his sixty-eight caps and twenty-three goals remained national records for many years following his last cap in 1966.  He made a big impression at the 1958 World Cup prompting Santiago Bernabeu, president of Real Madrid, to name him ‘the greatest inside-forward in the world’. He was appointed MBE in the New Year’s honours list of 1966. A life-size statue of Allchurch was unveiled outside the Swansea City ground in 2005.
