Milton Keynes Don FC

Milton Keynes Dons FC were formed after Peter Winkelman and his Milton Keynes Stadium Consortium were given the go ahead to move Wimbledon FC 46.5 miles north by the Football Association in 2002. It was a decision that shocked football and angered Dons fans enough that they formed a new phoenix club AFC Wimbledon. Milton Keynes Dons is legally a continuation of Wimbledon F.C. However, after negotiation with the Football Supporters Federation, the club agreed to entrust the trophies and memorabilia of Wimbledon F.C. to the London Borough of Merton and to make no claims to the history of Wimbledon F.C.  Initially based at the National Hockey Stadium, the club competed as Milton Keynes Dons from the start of the 2004-2005 season. After two seasons in League One, it was relegated to League Two in 2006. The club moved to its current ground, Stadium MK, for the 2007-08 season, in which it won the League Two title and the Football League Trophy under the management of Paul Ince. After seven further seasons in League One, the club won promotion to the Championship in 2015 under the management of Karl Robinson; however, it was relegated back to League One after one season and were relegated to League Two in 2018. At the end of a dramatic season they defeated Mansfield Town 1-0 in front of nearly 21,000 fans to return to League One after one season. MK Dons were relegated to League Two as their failure to beat mid-table Burton Albion, coupled with Cambridge United's victory over Forest Green Rovers, saw them drop into the relegation places on the final day of the 2022-23 season.
