Morecambe FC history

Morecambe FC is an English football club based in Morecambe, Lancashire. The club was formed  in 1920 at a meeting held in the local West View Hotel. The club took its place in the Lancashire Combination League for the 1920-21 season. Poor results in the Combination and the indifference of the local community meant that the club was in a constant battle for survival. After the Second World War, Morecambe  gradually consolidated, appearing in the FA Cup third round in 1960 and in 1974 they won the FA Trophy at Wembley.  Despite home attendances which had dropped from an average of 2,000 to less than 200, the club persevered and was eventually rewarded with a place in the new Northern Premier League in 1968. In 1995 Morecambe won promotion to the Alliance Premier League, the competition that evolved into the Conference. Here they were moderately successful until finishing in third place in 2006-07 to qualify for the play-offs. The club won the Conference play-off final against Exeter City, and with that, promotion to the Football League for the first time in its history. Having endured a number of near misses, Morecambe finally achieved promotion to League One via the play-offs at the end of the 2020-21 season. On 7 May 2023, Morecambe were relegated after being defeated by Exeter City. They will take part in League Two in 2023–24. Morcambe played their home matches at Christie Park from 1921 to 2010 before moving to Globe Arena.
