Northern FC was a Scottish football club based at Hyde Park in Springburn Glasgow, which enjoyed just one season as a League member (1893-94). Northern became founder members of the Scottish Alliance in 1891. They played their first match at home against Airdrieonians which they won 5-2 after a bitterly contested game. The Northern team consisted of Brady; Ronald and Rooney; Gormley, McKinnon, and Greig; Frazer and Cunningham, McNab, Downs, and Martin. According to the Lanarkshire Upper Ward Examiner, for 29 August 1891: 'Clear off-side, Cunnigham played the ball, and while the Airdrieonians were claiming for this infringement McNab succeeded in equalising with a fast shot, the referee refusing to grant a free-kick for Cunningham's previous infringement. The game was slightly better balanced after this, some improvement being visible in the Airdrie front rank...Northern, however, were playing the superior game, and from a scrimmage Martin gave his side the lead.' Northern joined the Scottish League two seasons later when the Alliance was incorporated as the new Second Division. They finished in equal eighth position (out of ten), level on points with Greenock Morton and failed to be re-elected in June 1894 (the bottom three clubs had to apply at this time). They returned to the Scottish Alliance but resigned part way through the 1896-97 season and the club was wound up.
