Peterborough United FC is an English football club based at London Road, Peterborough. The club was formed in 1934 and played in the old Midland League, which they won six times. They were admitted to the Football League in 1960, replacing Gateshead F.C. Following the 1960-61 Fourth Division Championship success, Peterborough spent seven seasons in the Third Division before being relegated for financial irregularities in the summer of 1968. The club took six seasons to return to the Third Division, winning the 4th Division championship for the second time. Relegation followed in 1979 and Peterborough subsequently spent 12 years back in the Fourth Division. Peterborough were finally promoted again in 1991 and the following season, having finished in sixth place, they won the play-offs to reach the second tier for the first time (now Division One). United were in Division One for only two seasons, finishing in tenth place in 1993, their highest league position to date. By 1997 they were back in the lowest division (now Division Three) but in 2000 they won the play-offs to return to Division Two.In 2005 they were relegated again to the third tier but recovery followed and in May 2009 they clinched promotion back into the second tier only to suffer relegation again the following season. Peterborough won promotion in 2010-11 defeating Huddersfield Town in the play-off Final to return to the Championship. This time they survived two seasons in the second tier before relegation at the end of the 2012-13 season. After being relegated from the Championship on the final day of the 2012–13 season, the team have played in League One. Peterborough were the winners of the 2013-14 Football League Trophy, beating Chesterfield 3–1 in the final at Wembley in March 2014. In 2020-21 season, Peterborough were promoted back into the championship but lasted only one season. Since their formation Peterborough United have played their home games at London Road.
