The Stevenage Borough was formed as Stevenage FC (the ‘Boro’ was added in 1980) in 1976 by a group of enthusiasts after the demise of the former town club, Stevenage Athletic. In their first season as a senior club Stevenage Borough won the double of United Counties Division One Championship and Cup before switching across into the Isthmian League Division Two winning the league in their first season in a senior competition. Following three promotions in four seasons in the early 1990s, the club were promoted to the Conference National in 1994. Despite winning the league in the 1995–96 season, Stevenage were denied promotion to the Football League due to insufficient ground facilities. The club were finally promoted to the Football League after winning the Conference National in the 2009–10 season. In May 2010 the club reverted to the original Stevenage FC, retaining "The Boro" as official nickname. After a memorable first season in the Football League, Stevenage won promotion to League One and narrowly missed promotion to the Championship the following season. They were relegated to League Two at the end of the 2013-14 season where they remain. Stevenage won promotion into EFL League One during the 2022–23 season and will compete in the third tier during the 2023–24 season.
