Stockport County FC

Stockport County FC is a football club from Greater Manchester. The Club formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers, shortly after merging with a similarly named club, Heaton Norris F.C. and on 24 May 1890 changed their name to Stockport County Football Club to reflect Stockport becoming a County Borough. They were placed in the Lancashire League until 1900 when they joined the Football League Second Division.  Joining the League meant the club soon outgrew their ground behind the Nursery Inn on Green Lane in Heaton Norris and, in 1902, they moved south of the River Mersey to Edgeley Park, then home of Stockport RLFC. County have played there ever since. They finished bottom for the first four seasons and at the end of 1903-4 failed to get re-elected.  Stockport spent one year in the Lancashire Combination before being re-admitted to the League in 1905.  They continued to struggle and in 1921 County were relegated to the new northern section of the Third Division although they returned a year later, winning the championship by six points. In 1926 Stockport were relegated and were stuck in Division Three (North) until 1937 when they returned briefly to Division Two. In 1959, Stockport were relegated after a single season in the new national Third Division. Promotion came in 1967 but in 1970 they were back in the Fourth Division. Lean times followed, and County had to apply for re-election in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1985.Having spent most of their history in the lower reaches of the Football League, the 1990s were notably successful, with the club competing in the First Division for five seasons (by then the second tier of English football). Instability on and off the pitch led to Stockport quickly tumbling back down the leagues. In 2008, the team won promotion via the playoffs back to League One. Unfortunately, County  couldn't build on that success and went in to administration before the final game of the season at Brighton. In 09/10 administration took its toll, and County finished on a new record low of 25 points and were relegated back to the bottom flight before finally losing their league status after 107 years at the end of the 2010/11 season. However, that stability didn't last long and in 2012-13 more financial issues off the pitch restricted the squad on it.  A 4-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers at the end of the 2012-13 season saw Stockport County relegated to the Conference North, meaning they would be playing regional football for the first time since 1905. They began a steady recover with promotion to the fifth tier in 2019 and then returned to the English Football League at the end of the 2018-19 season.
