Swindon Town FC history

Swindon Town FC is an English football club based in Swindon, Wiltshire. The club was founded by Reverend William Pitt of Liddington in 1879. The team turned professional in 1894 and joined the Southern League which was founded in the same year. Swindon reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in the 1909-10 season, losing to eventual winners Newcastle United. Barnsley F.C. and Swindon were invited to compete for the Dubonnet Cup in 1910 at the Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris. The result was a 2–1 victory for Swindon with Harold Fleming scoring both of the club's goals. The following season, 1910-11, Swindon Town won the Southern League championship, earning them a Charity Shield match with the Football League champions Manchester United. This, the highest-scoring Charity Shield game to date, was played on 25 September 1911 at Stamford Bridge with Manchester United winning 8-4. Swindon entered the Football League in 1920 as a founding member of Division Three. In 1921 the Third Division became the Third Division South: a division from which Swindon was never to be promoted or relegated, although it did have to apply for re-election at the end of the 1932–1933, 1955–1956 and 1956–1957 seasons.  The post-war era saw Swindon competing in the lower divisions of the English League. Though in 1963 the club was promoted to the Second Division, they were relegated two years later. A highlight of the period was the shock 1969 League Cup victory over Arsenal which was followed by promotion to Division Two six weeks later. In 1974 Swindon were relegated to the Third Division and six years later found themselves in the Fourth Division where they remained until 1986 when they were Fourth Division champions. A year later they made their way through the play offs to return to Division Two and in 1990 they were promoted to the First Division for the first time only to have it cancelled owing to irregularities over payments to players.  Swindon Town won promotion to the Premier League during the 1992-93 season, the only time the club has played in the top level of English football.  They lasted one season in the top tier and were relegated again the following season.   In 1999, the club was forced into administration and was relegated to Division Two (the old Third Division). By 2006 they were back in Division Two (now the fourth tier of English Football) for the first time in twenty years and earning them the unique distinction of being the first Premier League team to be demoted to the lowest Football division.  They were promoted to League One in 2007 and as champions in 2017 and 2020. However against continual financial problems meant they were relegated to the fourth tier in 2020-21 where they remain.
